With 143,000 active users, the Sure Petcare App connects a range of pet tech products, from cat flaps to feeders.
Sure Petcare has been engineering and selling consumer pet care products since 2010. The company saw the potential to access the IOT space by taking its products and reworking them. The result was a range of connected products allowing customers to see how their favourite friends were interacting with the products and help them provide better pet care.
The heart of all this was the app. Unfortunately not being an app development powerhouse back in 2015, the original version had a number of flaws.
Finally it was decided that a shift was needed to upgrade the performance of the app by rebuilding it on a new development platform. So the opportunity to rework the overall user experience was born.
Talking with users to understand their current frustrations.
I knew we had a strong user base by this point, as the app had been successful since we first designed it years ago. So, I started gathering feedback through online surveys and small interviews.
It became clear that, for customers, the site felt quite dated and suffered from numerous performance and usability issues.
One of the defining features of the app was it's reporting and graphs section – so we had thought! It turned out it was rated as the least useful section.
This is where all the research, planning and careful wireframing came to fruition. I also created a number of prototypes and carried out usability tests with users to reach the final product.
Fixing an unexpected problem.
When redesigning the app I made some research based decisions that meant the Home screen (the first screen the customer sees when opening the app) underwent a change.
It seemed to be supported and adopted well during testing but after launch it was clear users were missing the way they could see all their pets immediately!
We adapted fast and designed a new version and pushed it as a hotfix in a matter of days. The users loved it, problem solved.
